The City of Jeannette is actively working to re-structure and revamp the make up of our tax base. With a heavy tax burden being supported by a diminishing tax base, the city must work diligently toward long term solutions. A clear solution is to reduce the increasing costs of government operations, salaries and benefits. This goal is not easily, nor quickly attained. A secondary solution is to build a new foundation for a strong, sustainable tax base. Again, while not easily nor quickly attained, this solution is achievable. The city currently has a saturated housing stock and a diminishing population. Supply and demand is not in our favor. As we progress forward, the city hopes to play a role in the market correction of this concern. Through an acquisition and demolition project, the city hopes to eliminate dangerous and deteriorated properties. Further, by focusing efforts on adjacent parcels, the city hopes to create larger plats of land for which private development may have an interest in acquiring and developing.
